چکیده

We present TAURUS Fabry-Perot velocity data in Hα emission of the disc of the grand design spiral M 100 (NGC 4321). We have studied the emission spectra of the 200 H ii regions most luminous in Hα, calibrated in luminosity using photometric Hα imaging from the literature. The emission spectra of individual H ii regions were fitted using one or more Gaussian functions, and analyzed in terms of their velocity dispersion. We concentrate on the question of whether the emission lines show values of their internal velocity dispersions of H ii regions which would be predicted from the virial theorem, and find that in general this is not the case. There is a systematic trend to super-virial line widths, characteristic of the non-equilibrium effects of powerful OB stellar winds, and supernovae. We propose that the lower envelope in velocity dispersion σ, in the plot of Hα luminosity v. σ represents the virialized regions, and give a tentative theoretical explanation for its slope of 2.6 in the log–log plane, in terms of density bounding for the regions of highest luminosity.

Populations of high-luminosity density-bounded H II regions in spiral galaxies? Evidence and implications

In this paper we present evidence that the H ii regions of high luminosity in disk galaxies may be density bounded, so that a significant fraction of the ionizing photons emitted by their exciting OB stars escape from the regions. The key piece of evidence is the presence, in the Hα luminosity functions (LFs) of the populations of H ii regions, of glitches, local sharp peaks at an apparently in...

The origin of the ionization of the diffuse interstellar medium in spiral galaxies I. Photometric measurements

We present a complete study of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in a sample of six spiral galaxies (NGC 157, NGC 3359, NGC 3631, NGC 6764, NGC 6951, NGC 7479) using very high quality Hα images which allow analysis down to very low surface brightness (between 0.3 and 2 pc cm−6). Separation of the diffuse Hα emission from that of the H ii regions was performed using the most reliable method: subtrac...

ساخت و تحلیل فهرست ستارهای از کهکشان M33

In this study, 1200 images and catalogues of M33 spiral galaxy taken by WFCAM camera at UKIRT telescope in J, H and K bands. Cross correlation methods were employed to identify stars in overlapping regions from among images taken in different dates. Careful astrometric and photometric analysis was made to calibrate stellar positions and magnitudes using their 2MASS near infra red survey. The fi...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Ionized Gas inside the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 1

We have studied the differences between the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) and the H ii regions along a slit position in the local dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. The slit position passes through the two most prominent H ii regions: Hubble V and Hubble X. Important differences have been found in the excitation, ionization, and [N ii]λ6584Å/Hα and [S ii]λ6717Å/Hα line ratios between the DIG and the ...
